Are you balanced or balancing?

There is a lot of pressure to be “balanced”

Work/ life balance
Serious/ playful
Tough/ soft
Get it done/ take a rest

The new standard is to be balanced.
Funny thing about that?

Have you ever watched someone trying to have balance?

Someone surfing or, doing handstands
Or on a tightrope?

They aren’t balanced.
Nope.

They spend their whole time balancing.
It’s an action, a response to the moment.

One side to the other,
riding the wave, reacting against the wind.

How do you respond to the moment?

We have been led to believe that “Balance” is this rigid,
holy state we will attain and then feel good, finally.

But until then we feel a sense of failure at not being balanced.
Balance is really hard when you are a high achiever.

Great work, becoming a champion forces us to the edge of our abilities., constantly over and over again we are out on the wire of achievement.

It’s in this place that we stretch, reach and grow.

So for high-achievers “balance” is an impossible standard....
(Add it to all of the others)

So what is more useful?

Well balancing is a process of noticing what’s going on in your body and making the micro adjustments needed to keep you upright.

At this time of the year it feels like we have a whole heap off things blowing us in different directions,

But the aim isn’t to achieve being rigid.
It’s to notice our present moment experience, it's being flexible enough to change in response to what we notice.

Maybe a Christmas and boxing day of not being constrained by our discipline is what we need.
Maybe training less is needed, maybe taling all the extra time and opportunity to train more is what we need.

Maybe this year it’s ok to hop down off the wire knowing that you can hop right back on when you need to.

Sometimes the hardest work is knowing when to rest.
