General Manager at SMP.
Glue That Keeps It All Together.
Fiance.
Daughter.
Grand Daughter.
Sister.
Friend.
Woman.
These are the roles that I play every day,
and I know I’m not alone.
As women, we are the hardest workers in the room.
We do the most for everybody,
in every possible way we can.
We even squeeze in doing everything we can for ourselves.
I posted this photo back on my profile a few weeks ago with the caption -
Still chopping wood and carrying water.
It’s from a Buddhist Zen proverb -
“Before enlightenment; chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment; chop wood, carry water.” — Zen Kōan
And while I don’t have much to say about enlightenment, I do know that this is true for any aspect of life that involves a goal.
We often think the goal we have in our minds
will change us and our lives fundamentally.
But it doesn’t.
We just go on.
(And on and on and on, if your life has been anything like mine lately).
But it always comes back to one thing -
What you do is who you are.
Not just in the lead up to your comp.
Not just when someone is watching.
Not this week
or this month
or this year.
But every day you live,
for the rest of your life.
It would be easy for any woman to say -
“Too busy”
“Too stressed”
“Too <something>”
But we get up,
and we do the work.
… and it can be hard to rest.
Sometimes I get myself to the gym,
come hell or high water.
But sometimes, the hard work is also knowing when to stop and rest.
When to cut myself a break.
When to acknowledge that I carry a lot of responsibilities
and it’s okay to pause and breathe.
That’s what we teach at SMP.
Our clients are successful women like me and you.
They don’t have all day to spend in the gym or meal prepping.
Their lives aren’t perfect.
They are running businesses, raising children and doing everything else too.
While getting into the best condition of their life.
Achieving elite-level results and goals,
And not burning out while doing it.
Chopping wood,
Carrying water.
